McGinley will forever
be part of golf folklore.
Not only did the Irishman
hole the winning putt
(at the Belfry in
2002) for Europe in
his Ryder Cup debut
but he also won the
World Cup (1997) for
Ireland. His team
winnings are contagious;
McGinley helped power
Europe past Asia in
the inaugural Royal
Trophy last year.
McGinley, one of
the purest ball-strikers,
according to his peers
is unbeatable on his
best days. He finished
2005 as the 3rd ranked
player on the European
Tour after he captured
the Volvo Masters
at Valderrama, his
biggest individual
win to date. McGinley’s
terrific 2005 season
also included runner-up
finishes at Wentworth
in the BMW Championship
(twice) and the HSBC
World Match Play Championship.
But golf was not
always McGinley’s
first the love, the
Irishman also loved
Gaelic football throughout
his formative years.
However, at the age
of 19, McGinley suffered
a broken kneecap and
dedicated himself
to the game of golf.
The winner of four
Tour titles, in his
amateur days played
in the Walker Cup
for Ireland. |
