Profile |
One
of the greatest players
of all-time, his main
highlights of 2005
came off the course
with the success of
his many business
ventures and his burgeoning
media career as an
analyst for ABC’s
golf coverage in the
United Sates. But
the biggest thrill
came in March when
he was named as European
Captain for The 37th
Ryder Cup at Valhalla
Golf Club, Kentucky,
in September 2008.
An appropriate honour
as he has made a huge
impression on the
biennial contest since
making his debut in
1977. In all he made
11 appearances, his
last in 1997, and
still has the honour
of being the all-time
points scorer for
Europe with a record
of P46-W23-L19-H4.
Most memorable moment
on course in 2005
came in The Open Championship
at St Andrews, where
he thrilled the huge
galleries by finishing
in a share of 11th
place. The sight of
Jack Nicklaus winning
the Masters Tournament
on television in 1972
proved to be the defining
moment in his life.
Until then, cycling
was his main pursuit.
His mother organized
a course of six lessons
at Welwyn Garden City
and within two years
he had become an accomplished
golfer. Won numerous
professional tournaments,
but decided to revamp
his swing under the
tutelage of David
Leadbetter. The process
was long and painstaking,
but paid off as he
won three Open Championships
(1987-90-92) and three
Masters titles (1989-90-96)
with new swing. Produced
one of the great come-from-behind
wins in 1996 Masters
Tournament, beating
Greg Norman after
being six strokes
behind going into
the last day. Won
30 European Tour titles
including four PGA
Championships and
three successive Irish
Opens. Also won four
regular tournaments
in USA. Became first
player, in 1992, to
win over 1 million
pounds in a season.
Split from Leadbetter
in September 1998.
Partnered David Carter
to England’s first
victory in the World
Cup in Auckland in
November 1998. |
