Thaworn
claimed a career first
Asian Tour Order of
Merit title in 2005
after a spectacular
season which saw him
break numerous records.
The Thai won four
times and earned US$510,122,
unprecedented achievements
in Asia.
One of his most famous
wins was at the European
Tour sanctioned Indonesia
Open in March, 2005
where he shot a 25-under-par
255 total, the lowest
aggregate in Europe
and the Asian Tour.
Unfortunately, as
the preferred lie
ruling was in operation,
it will not be an
official record.
Known as a wizard
of the short game,
Thaworn was also voted
the Players' Player
of the Year after
becoming the player
with the most number
of wins – eight –
in Asia.
Finished fourth on
the Order of Merit
in 2004 and 2003 and
will also be remembered
for his remarkable
2001 season, when
not having won in
five years he triumphed
in successive tournaments
at the Singapore Open
and the Masters of
Malaysia.
Thaworn enjoyed an
impressive amateur
career in the mid-1980s,
highlighted in 1987
when he won the amateur
championships of Singapore
and Thailand as well
as the individual
and team titles in
the South East Asian
Games. He also helped
Thailand win the Putra
Cup in 1985 and 1986.
He has a highly unorthodox
swing but his touch
on and around the
greens is magical,
as proven by his win
in the 2005 Lowest
Putting Average. Said
he did not see the
need to change his
golf swing as "it
worked well for me
during my amateur
days and it works
now." The veteran
golfer is a lover
of fast cars and picked
up the game at the
Army Golf Club in
Bangkok where his
parents used to work
